Also known as the Mother Pearl, Abalone shells have their unique meanings and symbolism nested in almost every culture, as they have been a gift from nature for hundreds of thousands of years.
The Abalone mollusk feeds off of kelp and seaweed floating around the ocean, the colors of the organisms they eat, reflect the different colors on their shells. Abalones may look graceful when presented in jewelry, but their shells are so strong that they can withstand the weight of a truck, ringing true for their spiritual meaning as a symbol for strength.
In Indigenous cultures, the abalone was used to burn with sage, as it was believed to be a strong protector, and would help bring their messages to Spirit/the gods. It is also said to bring tranquility and harmony to the environment of the carrier, and its relationships.
Feminine energy is strong with the abalone, and can be worn by women who are expecting children, desire to be with child or those who already have children, as it ensures both fertility in the mother and good health in the child.
