Let's get started!
What is CBD?
CBD, which stands for Cannabidiol, is a chemical substance that comes from the hemp plant, so no, CBD, when isolated, contains no trace amount of THC, the component of marijuana that causes a physical or mental high.
What is the difference between CBD and THC?
The difference between CBD and THC lies in their original chemical formula, where THC contains a cyclic ring, and CBD contains a hydroxyl group. This seemingly small difference in detail makes up for all the difference between the two and actually controls why one component makes you feel high whereas the other is non hallucegnic.
All humans have CB1 receptors, which is affected by a neurotransmitter called an "anamide**" , which is the controller of generation of pleasure, motivation and feeding behavior. Basically think of CB1 receptors as a puzzle piece and anadamide as the piece that fits into it.
Like everything in nature there is design. Anandimides have a specific structure, one that is extremely if not completely similar to that of THC, meaning when you smoke any anything that contains THC, it is now acting as the puzzle piece to the CB1 receptor, resulting in you feeling high.
Now, CBD has a different structure, so it is not able to mimic as the anamide structure the way THC can, making it unable for you to get high by CBD.
If you're a visual learner like myself, feel free to watch this highly informative video on the differences between CBD and THC, you can fast forward to 27 seconds when the speaker begins talking about the structural differences between CBD and THC.
Who can use CBD?
Those who are prone to anxiety:
CBD has been proven to help those who cope with chronic anxiety, stress disorders and OCD, through Endocannabinoids: Your body naturally produces cannabinoids, which are used throughout your body and brain in the endocannabinoid system. This system can become imbalanced under chronic stress. However, CBD could help restore balance to the endocannabinoid system by preventing overstimulation of your CB1 receptors and by boosting your body’s production of endocannabinoids. Rodent experiments show that CBD relieves OCD and other anxious behavioursby acting on the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in processing and forgetting our fears.
Those who are coping with Alzheimers or other neurodegenerative conditions:
When CBD enters your body, it is directly affecting your nervous system, with the growing popularity of CBD, studies have been conducted since 2007 to prove the effectiveness of CBD in correlation to Alzheimers and Multiple Sclerosis.
Studies:
2007: This study showed that CBD can reduce inflammation within the nervous system due to Alzheimers disease
2017: CBD was tested in effectiveness with patients who had conditions such as Alzheimers, Parkinson's , Huntington's and ALS
Pain Management
CBD is a solution for pain management and not a short one either, as it is non addictive, so taking a dosage everyday will have no debilitating effects on your long term health. Opioids, or perscription pain killers that are distributed by doctors on a daily basis, are highly addictive, and are recommended for chronic pain, meaning doctors are advising patients to take a dosage of these drugs everyday for issues like:
- back pain
- migraines
- headaches
- arthritis
- fibromyalgia
and more. A recent statistic shows that every day 46 people die of a painkiller overdose and every day in the U.S. 2,500 young people between the ages of 12 and 17 abuse a prescription painkiller for the first time.
CBD is capable of treating:
- all types of arthritis
- Crohn's disease
- Headaches
- Cramps
- Muscle aches and pains
How?
CBD treats neuropathic pain, which is created through the glutamenergic system, this particular system is extremely excitatory, meaning once it is switched "on" it's hard to switch off. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter, responsible for turning neurons on.
Our bodies create inflammation to rid itself of damaged cells, and can get stuck in high inflammation if body is constantly in pain (damaged cells). CBD soothes the prickling, tingling, burning, pulling sensations we feel during times of chronic pain by inhibiting glutamine release, making it a neuroprotective.
